INFORMATION ON WHY SILICA MATTERS
Respirable crystalline silica is in natural and engineered stone and many building materials. Cutting, drilling, or sanding them creates fine dust that can be inhaled. Long-term exposure can cause silicosis (a permanent lung disease) and raise the risk of lung cancer, COPD, kidney disease, and other illnesses.
OSHA warns that workers who fabricate, finish, or install stone products are at risk. The risk can be reduced with simple controls: wet cutting, dust collection, and proper respirators. Review OSHA and Natural Stone Institute resources for more on lowering silica exposure in countertop work.
